Soapstone Prairie

Soapstone Prairie is a beautiful 18,000 natural area north of Ft. Collins, CO on the border with Wyoming. The area is rich in human history as a gathering place for ancient peoples dating back at least 12,000 years. This is the transition zone of prairie to Rocky Mountains that offers vast vistas from the general altitude of the area around 6,500 ft. There are extensive hiking, equestrian and mountain-bike trails along with picnic facilities.

Here is a small sampling of images from a spring-time summer morning visit. Soapstone Prairie is owned by the City of Fort Collins, CO and is one of 43 natural areas in the region owned and operated by Ft. Collins.

  • This is a May 2010 photo. June is the favored month for wild-flowers at Soapstone, especially along the higher altitude trails in periods after rain.

  • Hikers get a view of Mummy Range, miles to the southwest, rounding the point of a ridge near the Lindemann overlook area.
